A first-response routine
- Remove the source.Take away trash, food, trays and anything still in the refrigerator.
- Clean appliances.Wipe the microwave, refrigerator and sink, and clear the drain.
- Wash soft items.Launder bedding, towels and removable cushion covers.
- Wipe surfaces.Clean tables, counters, nightstands and door handles.
- Air the room.Open a window if the room allows or run the fan with the door open.
- Recheck after a few hours.Smell the room again once it has warmed up.
Suite-style rooms get the worst of it. Guests staying a week or more cook meals, reheat leftovers and leave pans for the next shift. Grease aerosols settle on nearby surfaces and make the room smell stale even after the food is gone. Strong smells such as fish, curry and garlic cling to fabric and to the plastic liner in a mini-fridge, and they persist where cleaning is only cosmetic.
Room service trays left in a hallway or inside the room can also cause a mild smell that is easy to remove if caught the same day. The key is speed. A tray sitting overnight on carpet or a chair can leave residue that needs more than a quick wipe.
Document what you find. A short note such as which appliance held the smell, how long the room was occupied and how the smell changed after cleaning gives the next shift a head start. Over time these notes show which room types, such as suites with kitchen areas, need a deeper clean between long stays. They also help managers decide whether a longer turnover window is worth planning for those rooms, and whether guest information at check-in could reduce the problem, such as reminders about trash and the use of the in-room appliances during extended stays.
What to do with what you find

- IfSmell remains in drapes or upholsteryThenLaunder or deep clean, then recheck.
- IfSmell returns when the air handler startsThenCheck the filter and the unit for grease and residue.

Common questions
Is a scented candle a fix?
It adds a different smell and may leave residue. Clearing the source is a better path.
Can a microwave be deodorized?
